Our visitors to Beziers

What a busy two weeks we have had.  Two weeks ago this blog was started.  Then people started to arrive. First to arrive was mother - 87 years young with a recently injured knee to cope with.  She flew from East Midlands airport into Carcassonne airport using Ryanair.  They were very good and wheel-chaired her on and off the plane.  It was a big surprise to see her in a wheelchair but better to be safe than sorry.  After our initial greetings she said she was upset because she could not walk as much as usual.  Thank goodness in and around Beziers there are plenty of places to visit without walking very far.

We left Carcassonne airport to return to Beziers to our house in the Faubourg district.  We drove back along the D610 onto the D11/D5 thereby avoiding the motorway.  The drive takes about 50 minutes if you do not stop to admire some of the places along the way.

One of the first places is Trebes - where one can see a myriad of boats in the port.  These boats, of all shapes and sizes, are hired by people, with more money than me, to explore the Canal du Midi.  The road follows the line of the canal for most of its length as can be seen by the lines of plane trees which line the towpathof said canal.  Marseillette and Puicheric are interesting villages/towns on the D610.  Going on to the D11 at Homps, where there is another small port on the canal, we have seen several restaurants but have not tried any of them yet.  I will let you know when we do.  The D5 commences about 2 miles outside of Homps and leads us through Pouzols-Minervois and onto Capestang.  Here there is a Gothic church never fully completed as the architect died (by the by this same architect also designed Narbonne cathedral).  There is though an impressive tower which can be climbed to get a view of the Aude plain towards Narbonne.  Leaving Capestang we carry on towards Montady, a mixture of old and new, where we found a very nice restaurantwhich is open all year round and overlooks the Etang de Montady.  Finally we arrive at our destination - Beziers.
